Easy Guide for Replacing Motorcycle Batteries

Every motorcycle owner knows that changing the battery is part of regular maintenance. However, if you’re new to the whole motorcycle battery replacement process, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Our easy guide covers all of the steps for replacing your motorcycle battery.

When Should I Replace the Battery?

When your motorcycle fails to start or won't crank at all, you know it's time for a new battery. When the battery is around 3-5 years old, you can replace it as a preventative step. This will offer you confidence that you will not become stranded when riding your motorcycle. Your engine should always start energetically if you have a decent battery.

Remove the Battery:

The first item on your to-do list should be to remove the motorcycle's battery. Batteries are usually found under the motorcycle seat. To remove the seat and reach the elements underneath, some models may require the use of a key. Depending on where the battery is positioned, you may also need to remove a side panel to obtain access to it. Before you get started, check sure your ignition switch is in the off position.

Remove the safety straps holding the battery in place and pull it out slightly to gain access to the cables once you've found it. Using a wrench, remove the cable from the negative terminal first. Then, before entirely removing the battery, remove the positive side.

Test Battery:

If you’re not sure if your battery needs replacement, you can take it to a local motorcycle shop to have it charged and tested. The test will show the battery’s health and help you decide whether or not you should replace your motorcycle battery.

Clean Battery Connections:

Examine your cable connectors when the battery is removed. Clean them with a wire brush if they have any corrosion on them. This will confirm that your new battery is compatible with the electrical system of your motorcycle.

Identify Correct Replacement Battery:

If you opt to change your battery, see your motorbike manual for specifics on which battery to use. You can also refer to your previous battery for help.

Purchase New Battery:

Following a few simple principles will help you increase the life of your battery. To begin, make sure you don't store your bike for an extended amount of time. Take your bike for a ride every now and then! Also, limit your driving to short distances. To properly charge your battery, you'll need to drive longer distances every now and then. Also, avoid connecting your bike to too many electrical devices that will drain its power, such as additional lights.
